Energy Output

Kiln-dried Birch logs are an outstandingly energy-efficient fuel source, with the capacity to produce an average heat output of up to 4.30 kWh/kg. Our kiln-dried wood maintains a moisture content ranging from 10% to 15%, significantly lower than the Government's recommended limit of 25%. Additionally, it generates minimal ash content, leaving less than 1% residue behind.

Energy Comparison - Hardwood vs Softwood

Kiln-dried wood releases a similar amount of energy per kilogram whatever the species - around 4.3 kWh/kg at 10-15% moisture. What differs between species is density: how many kilos fit into the same space. That is why a hardwood crate delivers more heat than a softwood crate of exactly the same size.

Like for like, kiln-dried birch carries around 36% more usable energy than the same crate filled with spruce. Dry matter densities per COFORD (Irish forestry research): oak 560-600 kg/m³, birch 500-520 kg/m³, pine 440-480 kg/m³, spruce 350-400 kg/m³.
