September Garden Tips


With the days becoming shorter and the nights longer and cooler. This is the time to enjoy the last throes of flowering late perennials such as asters and sedums.

Tips for September in the Garden

  • Check on newly planted trees and water well
  • Prune and remove the last of the rose flowers
  • Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as snowdrops and daffodils
  • Re-sow bare patches in the lawn
  • Continue weeding
  • Net ponds to stop leaves falling in
  • For Christmas time, force hyacinth and narcissi bulbs
  • Rake any fallen leaves
  • Do not wait for frost warnings to move your plants indoors
  • If your lawn is looking like it is in need of some TLC, aeratecompacted areas and fill any holes or cracks with land sand. Autumn is also agreat time to sow a new lawn from seed
  • It is a great idea to dig up any caladiums before the firstfrost, make sure to dry them and store them in a dry place to ensure they arenot damaged over the winter months.

  • Divide overgrown perennials
  • Remove any seedlings of woody plants like maple, if left for toolong they can take over the garden generating more work for you over the autumnand winter seasons.
  • Lay seeds from flower heads on newspaper and turn them often todry. Seeds are best stored in glass jars or in envelopes and kept in a dry,dark place.
  • If your soil needs some improvement add manure, compost andleaves, this will help increase the organic matter content.
